The holiday season is here!  Most of us have either started or will start our holiday shopping by now, and a few of the high achievers among us have already finished. (We’re jealous of them!)

While the holidays are overwhelmingly marked by much good cheer, thoughtful giving and much joy, there are unfortunately a few who choose to ignore the true spirit of the holidays and instead are intent one being “Grinches.” These are individuals who look at the holiday season as a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime.

So when you are out and about doing your shopping, here are some tips to keep in mind to help you avoid being a victim of theft:

  • Stay alert to your surroundings!! Do not walk through a parking lot with your head down or while talking on a cell phone.
  • Avoid shopping at night whenever possible. If you must go out at night, bring a friend or a family member. If no one is available to go shopping with you, let a family member know where you are going and what time to expect you home.
  • Dress casually and comfortable; avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
  • Avoid carrying a large amount of cash. Keep cash in your front pocket.
  • If possible, do not carry a purse or wallet. Carry only your identification card along with necessary cash, checks or credit card you expect to use.
  • If possible pay for purchases with a credit card.
  • Immediately notify your credit card company if your credit card was lost or stolen.
  • Have your keys ready when you leave the store.
  • Park in a well-lit area.
  • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion if danger presents itself.
  • Be cautious of strangers approaching you for any reason. Many thieves will use different methods to distract you with the intention of taking your money or merchandise.
  • Do not leave packages in plain view of your vehicle. Lock all your merchandise in the truck of your vehicle.

In addition to shopping, many families choose to visit their family memorials this time of year. If you do plan on making a visit, we encourage you to keep these safety tips in mind while you’re here:

  • Be careful when walking on slopes, damp grass, or grass covered with pine needles, as they can be very slippery
  • After sunset, please stay within lighted areas.
  • When you leave your car, lock it and take or conceal any valuables.
  • Be sure to check our website or call ahead to confirm park hours and the availability of sites such as the Forest Lawn Museum
  • Be aware that we do have wildlife in our parks.
