In previous Reflections, we quoted author C.S.Lewis who wrote, «You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.» That quote is a perfect segue into a new year, especially coming off one of the most challenging years in most of our lives.
The new year brings with it new hope and an opportunity for a fresh start. Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke said of January: «And now we welcome the new year, full of things which have never been before.»
As difficult as 2020 was, there are many signs of hope for 2021. A vaccine for the COVID-19 virus is being distributed to help combat the disease and help us get our society back to normal, or at least a new normal. Each of us gets to start the year off with clean slate. If we failed to achieve the goals we set for ourselves last year, we can reevaluate and set new goals.
A new year is the perfect time to pause for a moment and take a look at our big picture. What do we want to accomplish in 2021? Do we want to take some classes to further our education or learn some new skills? Perhaps we want to make a major purchase such as a new home or car. A new year is a great time to make sure our financial house is in order. Are we saving enough for retirement or college? Do we have adequate life insurance? What about a will or trust? And what about memorial plans?
