Another World Series is in the books! Our congratulations to the Chicago Cubs on a decisive victory over the Cleveland Indians and winning for the first time since 1908!

Of course, we were hoping for a Dodgers World Series appearance and victory. As proud sponsors of the Los Angeles Dodgers, it would have been great to have such another connection to the Fall Classic.

You see, Forest Lawn is already connected to the World Series through someone who is the only man in history to manage a team to five consecutive World Series championships. Between his playing and managerial career, he was part of eight World Series victories and a total of 10 American League pennants.

He also became the first man in Major League Baseball history to have had his number retired by more than one team based only on his accomplishments as a manager. In 2009, he was named “The Greatest Character of The Game” by the MLB Network for both his colorful personality and antics on the field, as well as his off-field contributions to the community.

Charles Dillon “Casey” Stengel was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. He passed away on September 29, 1975. His family chose Forest Lawn in Glendale as his final resting place. Casey’s wife, Edna, whom he had married in 1924, died three years later and was interred adjacent to him.  Near their family memorial in the Court of Freedom is a plaque reads in part: “For over sixty years one of America’s folk heroes who contributed immensely to the lore and language of our country’s national pastime, baseball.”
