International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated on March 8, honors women’s achievements, and advocates for gender equality. In 1910, Clara Zetkin proposed an international day for women’s rights, leading to its first celebration in 1911 across Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. The United Nations officially recognized it in 1977.

IWD celebrates women’s social, economic, cultural, and political contributions. Each year’s theme inspires action toward equality and highlights the collective efforts needed to achieve a fairer society.

Over the years, many amazing women from all walks of life have been memorialized at Forest Lawn. One of them, Jeanette MacDonald, excelled as an actress and singer, breaking barriers in male-dominated industries during the 1930s and 1940s. Another, Dr. Mary S. Ertl, is believed to have been the first female physician in Los Angeles, California. She practiced medicine during a time when the field was predominantly male, making her a pioneer for women in healthcare.

We honor and draw inspiration from the achievements of women past and present and create opportunities for future generations to thrive. Together, we can ensure that progress is both celebrated and sustained.
