Since our beginning, Forest Lawn has been much more than a cemetery. World renowned art, meticulously manicured grounds with towering trees, an unparalleled commitment to service, and having everything in one place—mortuary, crematory, cemetery, church, and flower shop—were all designed to make Forest Lawn a special place in the communities we serve.

Another example of that commitment to community has been through our many special events. Partnerships with local orchestras, educational children’s events, ceremonies to honor our military past and present, cultural celebrations, and innovative museum exhibits are hallmarks of this commitment. One community event that has been part of Forest Lawn’s history is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year: our Easter Sunrise Services.

The first Easter Sunrise Service took place in 1924 at Forest Lawn-Glendale high atop what was called Mount Forest Lawn, the site where the Hall of The Crucifixion-Resurrection currently stands. Before the Hall was built, the Tower of Legends, an artistically designed water tower, stood on the hill and created a majestic backdrop. With an orchestra shell at its foot and a lighted cross midway up the incline, these services were attended by thousands, and were often broadcast live on the radio.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Easter Sunrise Services at Forest Lawn, we will host special ceremonies at all six Memorial Parks. Beginning at 6 am, there will be inspirational music and messages to celebrate the holiday. In Glendale, there will also be a special family friendly event from 8 am to 10 am that will feature a petting zoo, arts and crafts activities for kids, light refreshments, and photo ops with the Easter Bunny. You won’t want to miss it!
