“Gold Star mothers and families know the immeasurable cost of fighting for the ideals we believe in, and they know the pride that comes with exemplary service to America.” ~ President Barack Obama

The loss of a loved one is never easy. But the loss of a child takes grief to another level of pain and emotional suffering. It is one of those ‘why’ questions that we will never fully understand in this life.

One group of people who have endured this hardship are known as Gold Star Mothers. They are the moms who have lost sons and daughters who were serving in the military. Their name was derived from a practice that was developed during World War I where families displayed flags with a blue star on them, signifying that a family member was fighting in the war. Along the way, people would add gold stars to the flag to indicate that a family member had died while on duty.

In 1936, Congress passed a resolution to designate the last Sunday in September as “Gold Star Mother’s Day.”  Now recognized as Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day, it serves as a reminder of the losses suffered by military families.

Throughout our nation’s history, brave men and women have put on the uniform to defend our nation and have put their lives on the line for all of us.  Equally brave and devoted are their families, who must live with the risk and uncertainty that their children may be in harm’s way and could make the ultimate sacrifice.

As we approach Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day, let us all stand with them and remember the legacy of their fallen loved ones. We at Forest Lawn honor and remember all who have endured much pain and sacrifice.
