One of the most popular holidays in Mexico, and one that is gaining in popularity here in the States, is the Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration. It is a traditional fiesta where Catholics from across Mexico and other countries pay pilgrimage to see an image of the Virgin Mary, and children are dressed in traditional costumes and blessed in churches.

The holiday celebrates the belief that a man named Juan Diego encountered Mary in Mexico City on two occasions—December 9 and 12 in 1531.

According to the story, Mary appeared and spoke to Juan in his native Nauatl language and told him to ask the local bishop to build a church on Tepeyac Hill. The bishop wanted proof of this encounter, so he asked for a miraculous sign. Juan went to Tepeyac Hill and found roses blooming in a location where cactus had previously grown. Juan returned to the bishop with roses in hand, as well as an image of the Lady of Guadalupe on his cloak. The bishop was now convinced and built a church in honor of the event.

Forest Lawn will host two Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrations on Sunday, December 6 from 2 to 4 pm. One celebration will take place at the Hall of the Crucifixion-Resurrection in Forest Lawn-Glendale, and the other will occur at Forest Lawn-Long Beach. The events will feature a religious procession and a service. Mariachi music and Aztec dancers will add a festive ambience and refreshments will be served. Admission is free.
